Orange carnelian. Height 1,4 cm.
Mars is shown nude, helmeted, walking towards a trophy to crown it, a spear in his right hand and a wreath in his left.
Circa 1st century B.C. - 1st century A.D. Graeco-Roman art.
Intact. Good style !

Comes from the Swiss private collection D.D.B., Lugano, formed 1960s-1990s.

Literature: For another Graeco-Roman sard, in the British Museum, showing the warrior in the act of crowning a trophy, see H. B. Walters, Catalogue of the engraved gems and cameos, London, 1926, nr. 2072. The motif is much more common with a Victory instead of the war-god Mars, as found both on Roman Republican coins and on gems, e.g. M. Henig, A Corpus of Roman engraved gemstones from British sites, Oxford 1974, nr. 302.
