Pair of Gothic columns - LimestonePair of Gothic columns - Limestone

Pair of Gothic columns.
Limestone. Height 124 cm.
Circa 1200-1250. Normandy, Eure (?), France.
Visible gaps. The surface of the stone is eroded, and the capitals partially preserved, especially at the level of the hooks. The upper half of a column is missing.

Impressive pieces of Gothic architecture, this pair of columns adorned with capitals with hooks can come from a triforium or a gallery of blind arcades. Each column is framed by two quarters of protruding columns.

The big abacuses surmounting capitals composed of flat water ribbed leaves and ending in hooks are typical of early Gothic.
