Fragment of French gothic bas-relief - Limestone

Fragment of French gothic bas-relief - Limestone

Fragment of bas-relief depicting a group of three heads.
Limestone. Height 30 cm.
1200-1220 A.D. Classicizing period of the First Gothic. France.
With stand.

The sculpture is close to Roman art, which it draws voluntarily, but differs in particular by the treatment of eyes.

The work is close to the sculpture of the abbey church of Saint-Yved-de-Braine, whose partially preserved portals date from 1210-1220, or the tympanum of Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire carved in 1200.

This group of faces may have been part of a church tympanum, possibly in a group of the Last Judgment.
