According to Roman mythology, Faustulus was a shepherd and garded flocks of Amulius, usurper king of Alba Longa, when he took in the twins Romulus and Remus, after they were suckled by a she-wolf . He raised them with his wife Acca Laurentia. These twins, great-nephews of Amulius, were the children of Rhea Silvia and the god Mars (as claimed by their mother, herself the daughter of the deposed king: Numitor).
