Carnutes (Celtic Gaul) - AE bronze

Carnutes (Celtic Gaul, Chartres area).
AE bronze, before 52 B.C.
Female head right. A flower with five petals (partially off flan) behind the head.
Eagle with spread wings three-quarters right, attacking a snake. In the right field, pointed ringlet. Under the eagle, S and pointed ringlet.
2,77 g. LT 6077 ; Scheers, Lyon 800 ; BMC S150 ; DT 2576. Nice dark green patina. Extremely fine

The obverse would reproduce Diana’s bust from the denarius of Ti. Claudius Ti. f. Ap. n., struck in 79 or 78/77 B.C. (RRC 770 ; Crawford 383/1). Gathered at Alesia, the strike of this bronze would therefore have a date before 52 B.C.
